Created for ‘The Potential of Pattern’, an exhibition at Sunny Banks Mill in 2020. When responding to a brief, I often look through the many reference books in my studio library. These include books on architecture, fine art, textiles, fashion, craft and product design. I had picked up ‘Missoni: Art Colour’ , a catalogue of the king of knitted pattern Ottavio Missoni’s art collection and opened the book randomly. The first thing that grabbed my attention was a piece of artwork by Italian painter Mario Nigro, the striking colours of the piece ‘Composizione’ (1951) became the reference point for the work created for the exhibition.
